What do i get out of photographing dogs?
Believe it or not, the most important thing i get out of attending a dog show is watching the dogs. They just put a smile on my face! Secondary to this is photographing the dogs, to capture why i am getting so much fun out of being at a show in the first place. Being a photographer of dogs has naturally resulted in owners and showers being interested in how the photos turn out and has thus eventuated into this hobby business of ours "Your World Photography". What we aim for is to get some lovely photographs for ourselves and hopefully ones that the public can enjoy. The profit from this merely funds attending our next show.
So have taken some shockers of show dogs? Well yes, and no. What we have taken is reality. And more often than not what some called "shockers" or "doesnt do the dog justice" photos, others love to see and enjoy. I personally love any photo that shows a dogs personality, whether in the ring, stacking or out of the ring.
Different breeds have differing "specifics" when it comes to "looking good". I repect the need for breeders and owners to want the best look for their dog in a photo, and i am always happy to remove any "unflattering" photos that are politely notified to us. More than that, i am extatic when someone points us in the right direction with images and websites of what they would like to see!
Are we the "competition"? Not really. There are plenty of dog shows in Australia to go around LOL. I take photos because i enjoy it. I go to dog shows because i enjoy it, not because i have to. I go to provide a photographic service and in the end we made our hobbie a business! how lucky is that!
Talking about what we love. We have two children that also enjoy coming with us to our shows when they can. they have work shirts and feel very important when handing out flyers. One day they may even try to learn the dog show ropes. So if you see them please say g'day!
We also have two beagles. Having pet dogs was inevitable really :) We do have a space on this website for them (as well as other events we attend). Bentley is 3 this week in fact. He is intelligent and mets my heart. Lucas is 13 and a recent buddy who has come to live with us. He sleeps and farts the day away. We also have 2 cats, 2 cockateals and a Major Mitchell Cockatoo that hasnt learned to fly and wolf whistles. A big animal family!
SO if you see us say g'day, if you have advice please offer it politely and constructively and we are always up for a laugh when it comes to discussing the antics of our canine buddies.
